Controller's Comments - Bill McLean
As most will have realised there is a difficulty at Sutton with predicting the runability over the heather and bracken. Also, there are places where reality and the map no longer coincide. These were either covered by general notes (rather than multiple map corrections) or careful planning. We trust that this was not something that you were too aware of. Judging by finish times and general comments the planners overcame these problems; although some on the Green (and perhaps the Light Green) may have found it a shade too physical.
On the day we became nervous about the route from the Start banner to the first control on White and Yellow. Results do not seem to have been affected but if anyone was confused then this was a fault of ours, not yours. Overall the event clicked smoothly along and people seemed satisfied and contented.
Planner's Comments - John Webb
Agreed that good teamwork with controller vastly assisted the job, both in terms of bracken and overall features, and in terms of small details which might otherwise have been overlooked. Thanks to Peter Leverington for use of OCAD files to print master maps. I used Microsoft Access to keep track of nearly 60 controls, and if anyone is interested in having the files, just send me a disc.
Organiser's Comments - Mike Sherwen
I overheard many times that courses were full of difficult decisions, thinking running at it's best. Well done John! It was an ideal day, without the usual Easterly blast from the Russian Arctic of the last two events there, well supported by approx 175 entrants, many of them youngsters.
Thanks:- to many visitors for coming so far, but hope they agree, along with King Raedwald, that its a special place, - to many cheerful helpers, many of whom did not get, or want a run due to the Flu' epidemic, -and thanks to my good fortune that I live so close to Sutton, and can do my training there. A good way to star the Millennium.
