Planner’s Comments (Steve Scoffin)

Bridge Wood is a small area – planning for this event was made more interesting by having 50% placed Out of Bounds, which meant that plans for a Green Course had to be dropped, hopefully all enjoyed this event despite this. My thanks to John Webb for his help as Controller and to Russell Edwards who took my place on the day. Thanks to Alastair Chapman (Ipswich Borough Council Countryside Ranger) for his help opening up car parking for the event and for his assistance in planning the courses.

Organiser’s Comments (Louise Walker)

As most regular orienteers know orienteering events do not just happen by themselves. Large or small, it all depends on the willing volunteers from the club who give up their time to enable others to enjoy themselves. So a big thank you to all of you who said "Yes" to helping out and who turned up on the day. As this was my first experience, it was a steep learning curve but (I hope) was successful.

We had approximately 80 competitors which was good for such a compact area and considering there was a rival event staged by WAOC at Brandon.

Unfortunately Steve Scoffin had a nightmare trying to plan four courses on an area of which 50% was out of bounds, but he managed it successfully with the help of his assistant Russ Edwards. Thanks to John Webb who was up early doing his stint checking maps, descriptions and location of the controls. See you all at the next event.

Semi-Controller’s Comments (John Webb)

I must admit to getting rather worried as the great day approached without any sign of any courses, but I need not have worried Steve had everything under control and the courses duly arrived, with me needing to have virtually no input. Considering the lateness of the finalising of the out of bounds areas, and their immense size, Steve did extremely well to put on the courses that he did. All comments that I heard were favourable, Which all goes to show what you can do with a small area even when most of it is out of bounds.

Overheard at the Finish

"I don’t understand why you are so out of breath, you only ran 2 miles" - said by an anonomous Y McL to a red faced and puffing Roger Lewis ( Light Green Course)
