First off, I want to thank The National Trust and those Suffoc members who gained the necessary permissions in order to gain authority to run the event. One of the main tasks of the organiser is to ensure that there are enough people to make sure the event runs smoothly, so I would like to say a big thank you to those club members who agreed to help on the day. Being Mother's Day made the task of getting help even more difficult than usual, but the small band of helpers worked well and ensured that the day ran smoothly and without hitch. (The only worrying moment was when, about 15 minutes before registration opened, the deer warden came over and mentioned that there were a lot of red and white flags around the place that could worry the deer!! Fortunately, all we had to do was move the finish banner!) It is definitely the case with running an orienteering event that 'many hands make light work.' The more helpers we have, the less time that is required of them and everyone can get a run without disrupting the event administration. So next time someone phones to ask for help, maybe consider giving an hour before or after your run. Worthy of particular note are Simon Peck and June Webb (and June's granddaughter)
for their excellent marshalling of the hundreds of cars that arrived on
the day. Not only did we have a decent numbers of runners for the event,
but also there were a huge number of visitors to Ickworth House who all
needed to park. |

When I initially looked at the Ickworth map, I thought how am I going to use the woods to the NW of the map. I really wanted to use it, as in the 6 years I have been in the area, I have never seen it used. So after a visit to the area (and armed with a map full of potential control sites marked) I started to plan. I toyed with the idea of a second finish but this was quickly discarded, as was a second start. (Both would have caused a headache for Julian the organiser). The courses had taken shape and were going in an anti-clockwise direction. Then, whilst out tagging the control sites, as I was coming backup the hill toward the house, I thought they won't thank me for this uphill stretch at the end of the courses. Thus, whilst staring at the map in the car, there was a sudden flash of inspiration what if So, after discussion with Colin (controller), the clockwise courses you all ran (and from all the comments I received) enjoyed were born. A nice warm up run then off into the woods where the thinking!? started. I must thank Colin for his guidance and for keeping me on the right track. I must also say well done to Julian. He did a very good job for his first time as an organiser. See you in the forest |

Ickworth presents a challenge to the planner - to keep the 'dead' distance between blocks of wood to a minimum, or at least to try to find some interest en route. The previous answers to the challenge have involved use of the southern blocks of wood - and very enjoyable they were. Paul, when trying to integrate Daisy Wood in the north with some other woodland, had a flash of inspiration to base the longer courses exclusively in this area. Then, having started thinking anti-clockwise, a further leap of imagination saw the direction of courses reversed, to give the enthusiastic, fresh-legged runner a tiring run, just to dull his/her judgement when entering the wood. The use of a high number of controls and thoughtful legs produced a good set of longer courses in a woodland with many helpful features, and acceptable runnability (at least at this time of year). Shorter courses that remained in Albana Woods used the perimeter path - It was a real pleasure to visit the park for snowdrops, celandines, and daffodils, and for the variety of wildlife - hares, fallow and muntjac deer, regular woodpeckers. In the week of the event, there was a frisson of concern about sheep being moved into the main park, thus restricting the use of permanently open gates. However, a useful discussion with the friendly Head Warden solved this one. Whoever coined the phrase 'The Silence of the Lambs' had not visited Ickworth on an early morning in March - the ewes and offspring were creating a noise level that could be expected in a nightclub (a disco bleat?). Paul made my job easy - so thanks to him and the organising team for
an excellent day. |
