Past experience has shown that Mothering Sunday is not a good day to run an orienteering event, and Sunday confirmed that. That said, thanks to all of the SUFFOC helpers who put aside their family duties for a while to turn out and help, with an especial thanks to Rob Coulter who took a great deal of the load off me. The SI electronic punching system has many advantages over pin punches and simplifies many things as well as providing detailed results very quickly. However, it does mean that a considerable amount of extra equipment and furniture has to be transported to the event, which poses problems if you have a small car. I hope that the experience has not put Rob off organising. One unexpected bonus of Mothering Sunday was that a far flung former SUFFOC stalwart drove down from Sheffield for the event (and visited his mother). Finally I wish to apologise to Hallie Hardie (one of the competitors in the first Rendlesham Forest event in 1972) for inadvertently expunging him from the results due to a misunderstanding. Sorry Hallie. |

I think you will agree we were fortunate with the weather and that the Forest at this time of year is at its best for orienteering. Rendlesham is generally flat and with bracken, nettles and brambles having died back, I expected runners to be reasonably unimpeded by seasonal vegetation. I therefore took an early decision to plan all courses at the top end of the proscribed BOF guidelines. I wanted to offer value for money ! I also believe that orienteering should be about navigation between mapped features rather than control site equipment. So often nowadays you spot the SI box and number long before you notice the feature. I therefore took full advantage of the recently shortened control stakes on the more technical courses and also hung the kites low where the approach to the feature was reasonably clear. Looking at the split times I guess some on the more technical courses experienced some difficulty navigating both between and within the circles. I set out to plan these courses with some route choice so as to provide some challenges in an area which frankly is not technically difficult. There are few point features - most of the controls were placed either on large linear features ( e.g rootstock bank ends) or vegetation boundaries. I hope therefore that those who experience some navigational 'problems' will forgive me and be encouraged by the success of others, rather than frustrated by their experience. I also wanted to offer some participants the chance to enjoy a longer runners course around the path network. Purple courses are rarely staged at East Anglian events - It was good to see that some selected this course in preference to the shorter more technical challenges. It justifies the planning and deployment of controls. My personal thanks are due to Rob and Verrill who helped me place the control site equipment on the Saturday, to SUFFOC club members, ex-members, and friends from WAOC and NOR who helped recover the controls after the courses closed, and of course Paul our controller who gallantly agreed to allow me to utilise controls over such a large area so that we could make the best use of the more open parts of the Forest. Thanks too to Simon for preparing the overprinted maps and to John and his team of helpers for underpinning the smooth running organisation. Finally - thank you all for coming Footnote: Some will have noticed posts with Orienteering plates affixed to them as you ran around the forest. Yes - Rendlesham does now have a Permanent orienteering course. The POC map suggests 3 different courses around the paths to suit beginners & family groups ( 1.7k. 3.2k & 4.3k). Two other courses ( 3.9k & 4.5k) would take you off paths into the more open terrain ( Light Green/Green standard). Maps are available ( price £1.50 if collected: £1.75 if ordered by post) from the Forestry Commission - Forest Office at Tangham (IP12 3NF) and will be sold from the Car Park kiosk and Camp site shop during Summer opening hours. Buy and enjoy. |

When Clive first gave me his courses, I got a bit of a shock seeing a purple course. But after looking at the course, he had managed to only require a couple of extra controls for it, both in a place I'd have to go past to get to the controls on the brown course anyway. One of his courses was a little bit too long but this was ironed out very quickly. When I finally visited the forest it became obvious that some controls would have to be moved as a lot of the earthbanks and rootstock banks were not quite as shown on the map and the runnability of some the areas of young trees had become impenetrable. Clive was quick to come up with alternative sites giving us legs that managed to avoid the worst of the affected areas. On the day one control box (114) on the junior courses decided to pop it's clogs and stopped flashing and beeping. This was reported fairly early and the control was quickly replaced. The dibbers downloaded showed that the control, although not flashing or beeping, was still recording a valid punch on the dibber as it was full of the code 114 leaving no room for the rest of the course. Of the 6 runners that were affected, 2 were not re-instated as they had not punched the finish. The rain was kind enough to hold off till the end so only a couple of late entries and those collecting controls got wet. So a good days orienteering was had by those that had ignored the forecast and turned up. |
