When I originally agreed to organise this event, I wasn't too sure what I'd let myself in for. However, every thing seemed to run fairly smoothly. This was mainly due to the small band of helpers on the day. My thanks to them all for a job well done, especially to those who gave up their run. It wasn't till late Thursday, that we finally got the go ahead for the event. And on the Saturday afternoon, when I went to check out the new car park, I got called on to put out controls after Mac took ill. Had I not done so, the event would probably have not gone ahead. Therefore, some of the things I should have been doing were done at the last minute whilst burning the midnight oil. This unfortunately led me getting to the event area early on Sunday morning and realising that I had left the event information sheets in the printers out tray at home and it was too late to go back for them. As it happened the information about the blue and brown courses having 2 master maps and that both were to be copied at the start, was included in the sheet that Mac had produced to advise about the fallen trees. Thankfully the weather decided to take a turn for the good and stayed with us for the whole day. This was probably the main reason for a turn out well beyond what I originally expected. Some valuable lessons have been learnt, and I'll do better next time I organise an event. See you in the forest |

Rendlesham North is an attractive area; but small and probably better mapped at 1;10,000. The planning framework had to be in place in late September when the bracken, in particular, was very different. Many legs just steered courses away from impossible areas. I thought the area ought to support a worthwhile Brown course but was concerned about length and reluctant to include the dull area across the road. Consequently we put the Brown course length in the pre-event details. I hope, if you found it a little short, that you thought it was a reasonable thing to do. Because of the high winds of the week before it was not until Thursday evening that we were confident that the event would go ahead and not until Saturday that we were allowed in to survey the damage. Mr Jim Smith of the Forestry Commission deserves credit for keeping his nerve and allowing our event to take place despite discouraging entry for the general public. We had some concerns about the fallen trees blocking paths on the shorter courses but there was little to be done at that time. It seems that you did`nt find it a problem to go round. Our original car park was much closer to the start and finish but this was closed. Hence the long walks. Sorry. The lawless band of mushroom pickers was unexpected. I am gratefull to the controller worked dilligently to guide me towards improvements especially as runability improved and managed to rescue me from nearly all my errors. However, all of this is overshadowed by my sloppy planning, especially on the notorious leg on Green, Blue and Brown. Clearly this spoiled the event for those on these courses as, indeed, it did for me. For the benefit of those particularly agrieved I can promise that it won`t happen again. |

Apologies to competitors on the Green, Blue and Brown courses who were confused by the unmapped rootstock banks in the block of forest to the North of control 146. In retrospect I should have controlled the legs and not just the position of the controls. In this case, during both planning and controlling the control in question had been approached on all occasions from the ride to the South in order to ensure accurate positioning. There were other glitches in the organisation that tarnished the day for some. The last minute details sheet never made it to the event and I didn't think to brief the start team to warn competitors so at least one W21+ (sorry Kim) thought the second master maps were half way round the course. We had thought to make life easier by splitting the longer courses into two parts and providing two maps so that the possibility of misreading the control sequence because of cross-overs in the course design was minimised. Changes to courses after making this decision also meant that some distances to the finish from the last control were wrong and one control was visited twice by the blue course. No prizes for guessing which one. (146). Anything else? Ah yes, the carefully organised blue sky clouded over at 1.00. I suspect that much of this is complete news to most of you, but to those who fell foul of the gremlins I'm sure the few wasted minutes were disappointing. For me (three days in the forest) and Mac (more than that) too. Despite all that we hope you enjoyed running through this most attractive corner of Rendlesham. Certainly I enjoyed the opportunity to see the rutting stags and their harems, including the striking white doe. I trust they survived the cull! I also enjoyed working with Mac who produced some excellent courses in a tight space and was splendidly well organised throughout. He did a great job in spite of falling ill during the placing of controls on the Saturday. The rest of the small SUFFOC team coped with the pressure brilliantly on the day under Paul's leadership. Thanks to them all on behalf of the large number of you, the customers, who enjoyed the fruits of their labour. |
