Suffolk like other clubs struggles to find organizers for events, but without the support of its members no events would be possible. A big THANK YOU therefore to all those Suffolk members who helped on the day and made the event a success. A special thanks also to Stella Sills ringing around everybody to ask for help. I am also grateful to John Webb for running the electronic punching. Electronic punching has added value to the sport of Orienteering but has the downside of requiring additional resources to run an event for a small club such as SUFFOC. This was my first event as an Organiser and I was extremely grateful to the sunny weather for making my life easier. Everything went smoothly on the day except for the sign posting to the event. Apologies for no signs being initially present on the A140/A14 roundabout as I had signposted the alternative route choice from the A14/Claydon roundabout. I hope this did not detract from anybodys enjoyment of the event. |
Andrew Elliott - SUFFOC |
Having never planned a colour coded event before, it was with some trepidation that over 18 months ago, I agreed to plan this event. However, just as I was about to go and reconnoitre the control sites I had identified on the map, the rug was pulled from under my feet by the Foot & Mouth epidemic. When the event was finally resurrected, I dusted off the map with all the control sites marked and duly wandered off into the park. I very quickly established that I wasn't going to be able to make any use of the southern half of the map as it was, in the main, fenced off for the sheep. I therefore decided to have a second master map for the brown course and take it round the same area again so as to get the distance required to be within the guidelines. Thanks to Bill McLean, my controller, for keeping me on the right path and the sound advice and encouragement he gave. Thanks to Clive Coles for his assistance in putting out the controls, also to those who helped collect them in at the end. So there it is my first full colour coded event over and done with, I hope you all enjoyed your courses as much as I enjoyed planning them. Though judging by all the favourable comments received it seems that you did. See you in the forest |
Paul Lowe - SUFFOC |
I was alarmed to find that Paul meant to keep all the courses within the comparatively small wooded area of the map. However, well chosen control sites and turning points provided imaginative courses and delivered guideline finishing times without including dull legs across the open. Possibly, the Brown would have benefited from strengthening, but all courses seemed well received. I had several qualms but in retrospect only two seem worth mentioning. The sudden surge of nettles was about to make some legs impossible. I hope you agree that tolerating shin high growth was a better option than re-planning to poorer legs. Secondly, I wondered how much criticism would result from the colour mis-match with the master maps and with the pictorial control descriptions used on the technical courses. Comment was muted. Perhaps the wonders of PICOVER is going some way to compensate for the extra load placed on the planner by using electronic punching is being appreciated. Ageing controllers need all the assistance they can get with activating the boxes on the morning of the event and I would like to acknowledge the help I had from Clive Coles and my wife Yvonne. Two boxes were down and had to be replaced but none failed during the event. It was of course, remiss to fail to signpost from the A14/A140 roundabout. Apologies are made to those who nevertheless found their way. No means of apologising to any that didn't make it I am afraid. |
