Suffoc is one of the smaller Orienteering clubs but we pride
ourselves in being able to put on 4 quality events a year, but to do so
we rely heavily on the support of our members for help. As organisers it
was of great encouragement to us that all club members who turned up also
helped by taking on at least one task, for which we thank them as it makes
the organisers job so much easier and rewarding. The event went without
any hitches and attracted 129 runners. Feedback on the day was most positive
on both organisation and course planning. One area of weakness we need to
resolve for the future is that we had no members with appropriate first
aid certification attending the event.
A decision taken by the committee which proved expensive but we believe absolutely necessary was to hire a portable toilet for the event. If we are to attract and retain runners within orienteering the provision of adequate toilet facilities is no longer an issue we can avoid. The cost of doing so meant we had to increase the originally advertised adult entry fee by £1 to £5; still value for money. Found: pair of Silva size 8 running shoes and mens black leather gloves. Listening to the pouring rain during the night before the event, I was dreading a wash-out, but the day started fine and even became sunny. It was good to see so many competitors arrive and give the courses a go. Planning this event gave me and the mapper cum assistant planner Simon many pleasant days out wading through the heather finding features, debating and tagging control sites, and assembling controls. I did try to avoid the worst areas with a combination of deep heather and rabbit holes. The final set of courses was a considerable improvement on the first draft, and I hope you enjoyed them. Looking at the results, there was one knoll on the Green course that was particularly challenging. Losing contact with the map in that area was bound to be expensive in time, as it's full of indistinct vegetation boundaries that make it hard to relocate. There was one brown course runner who didn't feel stretched enough by the heather, completing over 600m of it at a pace of just over 4 minutes per km. He'd just about warmed up when he finished, so he took another map and went out for a run round the green as well! Thanks go the organisers for their fine work that ensured the event happened and ran smoothly, and to Bert, our controller, for his assistance in getting together the set of courses, and who set out to check all the control sites at the crack of dawn, in the wet. |

It is always a pleasure having an excuse to spend time on Sutton Common, which has to be SuffOCs best area, as well as being the closest to my house!. It was made more pleasurable this time thanks to Simons revised map, which now gives the navigator a better feel for the trees on the heath areas, where reading the various grades of tree density had been a problem before. I always make a point of getting feedback form runners on the day, and Annes courses were exceptionally well received, which is a reflection of the time and effort I know went into them. You will be pleased to know that I ensured the goats (sheep?) were friendly to humans, although very inquisitive when I bravely approached them on our first meeting, I hope they start eating the heather soon! When I planned on Sutton Common in Jan 99 my Brown Course was ‘destroyed' by Dave Rollins, who is now the GB Orienteering Team Manager, and has a mention in the Peel Adventure/ACE Race series article in Octobers Compass sport. Which is spooky as Tim Lenton who flew round Anne's Brown course also has an article in the same edition, recounting his recent success in the Hebridean Challenge 2004 multi sport race. Who will turn up to SuffOCs next event? – apart from all of you coming back of course! |
