Considering the dry summer weve had, and the week following the event, we were unlucky with the weather. The forecast of gales and steady rain must have put people off, but those that came really enjoyed it. Several complemented us on the interesting courses and the way the whole event went. I was pleased to see a few new faces among the helpers, and for the cheerful way we all did our tasks which made the evenings spent on the phone worth while. Thanks to the Forestry Commission for use of the lovely place and for
clearing the rides for parking. though the huge rut which was revealed
in our registration area took some steering around! |

Nearly two years ago I wandered down the forest road towards the your start area, blank sheet of paper in hand, feeling a little uneasy about the task Id taken on. 500 hours later I know I was right to feel daunted, but I have had a very enjoyable time preparing the map and courses. So if you didnt like the map or felt the courses unfair Im the one to blame - though I take no responsibility for the weather - with the worst conditions for 3 months pretty well coinciding exactly with the competition - I hope it didnt spoil things too much for you. This was my first fully electronic event - from cartography using OCAD to locally printed maps and SportIdent for the forest. It seemed like more work for the planner, and you certainly need to have a project plan to make sure nothing gets missed or is late but I shouldnt complain too much as I know I prefer pre-marked maps and e-punching when competing. As to the courses, I feel I slightly under-estimated the physical challenge as the area is very flat and my trial runs last November suggested the bracken would not be a significant problem. This led to senior courses that were perhaps 5-10% too long. Split times also gives a lot of information from which certain inferences can be made. For example the Yellow only caused problems to some competitors when several decision points were introduced to a leg . The Light Green was probably a bit too difficult technically and the Green may have been a bit tough physically given the EAGAL classes assigned to it. There were also indications that competitors coped very well with the open heathland, but several were caught out by the change of technique required when the course went from the more runnable areas into the greener areas. The splits also highlighted the problem controls. 115 on a vegetation boundary by a path junction and legs over indistinct paths proved to be difficult for several youngsters and 131 - the small gully on the forest/heath edge proved costly for about a third of the seniors. In retrospect the large depression just to the south would have been a fairer end to the leg as orienteering is about navigation of the leg rather than hunting for a control. In contrast 140, the pit in the green area, was I feel fair. Difficult yes, but on at least 7 visits, from different directions, I never failed find it quickly. The key was to recognise potential to lose time when trying to locate a point feature in dense forest, adjust technique accordingly and the use the handrails (the rootstock banks / planting lanes) and attack points (the other pits by the rootstock banks) available. The fact that the nearest catching feature (the forest edge) was 160 metres away made errors in distance judgement potentially very expensive. Enough of analysis. Some excellent winning times were recorded with several competitors appearing to have virtually error frees runs. Most people seemed to enjoy their runs and we received several positive comments which made our efforts worthwhile. If you enjoyed the area please tell your friends as you were in fact only offered about 60% of the mapped area. In about 18 months we hope to offer the Blaxhall event which will be run on a map comprising of some more coniferous blocks to the north (many of which are runnable), some interesting heathland and the best bits from todays Tunstall map. And finally, thanks to Richard for his sympathetic and helpful controlling,
Mike and his teams for the smooth organisation both before and on the
day, to Forest Enterprise and Tunstall Parish Council for land access
and to Anne who sacrificed her competitive run to visit all 47 sites on
Saturday to help me place and dress the controls. |

First I would like to thank all of you that turned up on a wet and windy Sunday to orienteer in Tunstall Forest for the first time in over 15 years. Judging by the comments of competetitors immediately after finishing, you enjoyed the testing and physical courses set by Simon the Planner. But before you complain you should have seen some of the sites and area's we rejected due to the undergrowth. A number of senior competitors particularly remarked on the pleasant lack of optimal path-running routes on their courses. It is clear from listening to your route choice and scanning the split times that Tunstall Forest caught out a few experienced competitors, - small lapses of concentration can cause significant time lost in relocating. It is a pity that there was not a larger turnout to appreciate the planner's considerable efforts. Many thanks go to the organiser and his small team for their hard work. And to all SUFFOC members who braved a cold and wet day to help. |
