What a glorious day for Orienteering the sun shone and the wind was only a very light breeze. Many hands made the work of the organiser on the day fairly light. Apologies to any runner who had to wait for a course map. We were not expecting the 75% rise in competitors since we last ran an event at Knettishall in 2005. I suspect a training run prior to the Compass Sport next week being the reason for the large turnout. Thanks to Martin Hore for planning some excellent courses and our controller John Webb for some well timed advice. I'd also like to thank Suffolk County Council for letting us use the Heath. See you in the forest |
Clive Wilkinson - SUFFOC |
It's always a gratifying when an event you've planned achieves a good turnout, but this was quite exceptional for a SUFFOC district event. Apologies to those later entrants who had to wait for their map, or, in a few cases run a different course. I printed more than the maximum attendance at any comparable event in the Thetford forest area during the last two years, but this was exceeded on both the Blue and Orange courses. With only 43 control sites and lots of legs common between different courses, I expect there may have been more following than if there had been the hundred fewer competitors we expected. Apologies if that affected your run. This is the first event I've planned where I have been able to see the results of my efforts displayed on RouteGadget. Thanks to those of you who took the time to plot your routes. It's an excellent learning exercise for planners to see whether folk actually went where you thought they would. From the few routes I've looked at so far, it seems that by and large I did achieve the aim of keeping people on the senior courses off the paths as much as possible, and presenting valid route choices on at least some of the legs. I hope that's how it felt to you. With the restricted area available at Knettishall, the longer courses inevitably had to visit some bits of the forest several times – hopefully the bits best worth visiting. Thanks to all of you who passed on your thanks to our helpers at the end of your run – much appreciated. Thanks to the SUFFOC team who helped on the day, and on the day before, thanks to Clive for organising, John for controlling and Paul for IT advice and assistant controlling, and thanks to the AA for carrying my damaged car back to Ipswich at the end of the day. |
Martin Hore - SUFFOC |
Knettishall Heath makes a pleasant change from the grid iron pattern of the Forestry Commission woodland where when the bracken is high navigation is of the 1 st on the right then 2 nd left variety. At Knettishall much more thought was required. Martin appears to have been successful in keeping the senior courses off the paths and at least one competitor found himself in what felt like unfamiliar territory. At a late stage I wondered if one of the controls on the orange course would cause competitors problems, but the “Splits Browser” showed that not to be the case. The splits Browser also showed that mistakes were distributed fairly uniformly over the controls rather than one single control causing a lot of people major problems. This is a compliment to Martin's planning. One thing that I found a great help was Martin's use of easily removable “Hi-viz”tape for tagging control sites. A controller can waste a lot of time at a control site but unable to spot the tag which manages to hide. Martin's tags could be seen from miles away, which is why I removed them and put them on the ground when checking the controls. Martin can supply details if required. As there was a large number of newcomers present, a few words of encouragement and advice may be helpful. If everything went brilliantly successfully then congratulations. If on the other hand you were less successful, please don't be put off. Most of us had problems when we first started, and even most of the experts are capable of messing things up in a spectacular way from time to time. It is worth looking at the “Splits Browser” and “Routegadget” sections in the results to see what other people did as there are normally useful things to be learned. Time spent looking back over what you did, and thinking how you could have done things better, is not time wasted. If you found it too difficult, try dropping down a colour for the next event. If you found it rather easy try moving up a colour. The ideal is something that you find a challenge, but not overwhelming. Although most experienced orienteers will run the course set for their age group, there is no compulsion to do so. If you are regularly at the top of your age class, especially at minor events, try moving up a class; such is the stuff of champions. |
