Organiser's Comments

A very well attended event with a lot of new comers to the sport. 63 Seniors/ Groups and 35 Juniors. Unfortunately out of the club membership of 68 only 21 were available to help out on the day. This caused manning problems as we were using pin punches and control cards which take a lot of man power to check and calculate the results. My thanks to all the helpers especially the mathematicians on the results…only two errors were found on recalculation of the results.

For future ‘come and try it events' more club members at registration would be useful to explain the registration process to those new to orienteering and to answer any questions. Perrys' training sessions on the basics of orienteering just before the start were well received.

The start was overwhelmed at one point and the decision to put the master maps before the start was a good move. More master maps would have solved the problem but then with the rain showers you then get the problems of providing adequate shelter for the master maps. (No win situation).

Perry produced ‘Welcome' and ‘Goodbye' sheets which gave relevant information for the event and club details. With hindsight…. Registration forms requesting competitors contact details would have allowed us to follow up and target potential new members with copies of the Punch, membership forms, future events lists etc..Just a thought for the next time.

Planner's Comments

Most of the planning for these courses was done during my daily train journey to London, mainly identifying a White course and potential control sites. Once these control sites were linked and drawn on the map, I then went to Shrublands to see if they were possible!

I was conscious of not repeating the courses that were planned last time the area was used in September 2003, and of the White course from April 2002, as I had run this with my son. I also wanted to have the start, finish and coaching areas near to the car park.

I'd decided to keep mainly in the northern area as the previous time, courses were based mainly in the open parkland to the south, but with the nettles and bracken being high, I had to revise some of my control sites and routes choices. After a series of telephone conversations with Paul followed by revised courses being posted through his letterbox at unearthly hours, all his concerns were eventually addressed the courses were finalised.

I was pleased to see that beginners were trying the courses that I'd suggested in the Welcome leaflet. It was good to see the White only being used by youngsters and families with very young children, with the adults and older family groups tackling the Orange course. So often I think we are in danger of underselling the sport by sending beginners off on too easy a course, which may be boring, rather than the adventure sport they were expecting.

Thanks are due to my children, Catherine for helping me sort the canes and punches out, and Henry for helping me hang the controls on Saturday afternoon. Thanks also to those of you who collected the controls at the end of the day.

As a first time planner, Paul's expertise was invaluable - I hope you all enjoyed the end result. And how did I avoid repeating courses from previous events? -easy, I sent the runners round in the opposite direction!

Now with coach's hat on:

As this was an event aimed at beginners, I thought that it might be useful to provide some really simple tuition for anyone who wanted it, to teach them some techniques that experienced orienteers do without thinking, such as keeping the map oriented, and folding and thumbing the map. The 5-10 minutes that the exercises take seemed to be appreciated by those who took part and hopefully found it gave them that bit of extra confidence.

Usually, most beginners at orienteering events have some idea about what the sport entails. I was amazed to come across a number of people who had seen it advertised, thought it sounded interesting, and turned up, not really knowing what it entailed. Hopefully, all as a club, we managed to explained it all! Thanks are due to the Start Team who made sure that people knew what they were doing, and told them all the things that I'd forgotten, and to Bert Park for helping me with the coaching.

In hindsight, the coaching area would have been better set up near the registration area, so as to act as a focal point for all beginners and take some of the burden away from the Registration Teams.

Controller's Comments

It was good to see so many newcommers at the event, this was despite the forecast for rain which, apart from a couple of early bits of drizzle, kept away. I fully endorsed the decision to allow the courses to be copied before starting, however at one stage it was swamped with runners waiting to copy their course. More master maps would probably have eased the load a bit but then not all of them would fit in the tent.

Perry produced a good set of courses (albeit with a bit of a nudge to keep the longer courses at the correct technical difficulty). He had a knack of producing everything I asked for just in time. At the finish all I seemed to hear was talk of how much everyone had enjoyed themselves. Hopefully they'll all come to our next event - 6th November at Ickworth. One comment worth mentioning (from a seasoned orienteer) 'I never thought I would have to think so much on a purple course' Which for a first time planner is well earned praise.

The only adverse comment I heard was from the finish team and was about how much more work was required in the results tent when using pin punching. (May be we'll revert to SI at our next CATI). Well done to all those who worked in the finish and managed to produce the stubs on the washing line quite quickly.

See you in the forest
