Sadly this spring, on 20th March aged 75 years, long term member Colin Butler passed away and we send our best wishes to Aileen, his wife, as she adapts to her new life. For many, the Butlers have been a feature of the Club for many a year. Indeed, our first discussions have found it hard to identify when Colin actually first joined the Club. Aileen believes it was about 1984 though they dropped membership for a time when they went abroad. Being relatively similar in age, we ran the same colour of course and so I would often see Colin running through the forest during an event.  At the end, as we did our review, Colin would rue a leg where things hadn’t gone right but it didn’t dent his cheerful character or willingness to try again next time. Aileen would take things more slowly, seeking to crack the techniques of orienteering rather than break any speed records. But again, there would be the smiling face at the end, regretting a mistake but always ready to try again.Colin was one of the team of mappers for the Club and his name graces the bottom of many maps. He was particularly proud of the extensive work to map the Denes & Gunton Warren and surrounding areas with its complexity of vegetation and masses of paths.  The Butlers were on their own in terms of members living in the NE of the county leading to the Club focussing on the south and west more than their home patch and so Colin’s maps had limited, sporadic events: no doubt requiring regular updates as inevitable change happened.Colin in particular put in good work mapping some school grounds in the NE of the county. Though small, such grounds are often technically challenging as decisions have to be made over what detail to include and what to omit. His patient work has paid off with a number of schools from the area taking part in the County Schools Championship. His last map, that of St Felix School outside of Southwold, is looking to act as an area venue for inter-school competitions. I can remember visiting the school to go over the final draft ready for such a competition – and the lovely tea and cake we had with Aileen afterwards: always ready to enjoy the good things of life! His work as a naval architect / ship surveyor, running his own contracting business from 2006, underpinned his design and digital skills with maps. Elected as an independent Town Councillor in Lowestoft in 2019 he used his mapping skills for his community and his interest in sustainable transport saw him supporting the railways as well as nipping around on his bicycle when he could! His web-giving page still exists at https://colin-butler.muchloved.com/ with funds going to the RNLI.To remember Colin and his work helping the Club, we shall dedicate the Score Event at this year’s AGM on September 8th in his memory.by Simon Hooton
