In the last few years we have travelled abroad in February for our orienteering fix.  It has the benefit of orienteering in different terrain whilst also, usually, being a bit warmer than the UK.

In 2026 we travelled to Southern Spain for the Malaga Orienteering Sprint Camp. (MOSC)

  • Tuesday, 22 October, 2024

Over the last few years, the Club has been working with schools to introduce orienteering to pupils, often through the School Sports Organisers who work with a collection of schools in an area. This has included a range of support mechanisms from after-school and online training sessions for teachers, teaching the basic skills and sharing simple activities that can be undertaken on the grounds, to direct sessions with classes.

We are looking forward to the inaugural Springtime in the East weekend coming up, a collaboration with NOR to host a packed weekend of orienteering in the heart of East Anglia. With a rapid interest in online entries for the Ickworth Park event over the last few days, we have now reached the maximum limit on number of participants, permitted by the National Trust. Entry online and on the day are unfortunately no longer available.

  • Thursday, 11 April, 2024

The SUFFOC League is an internal club competition our captain John Clarke has been running the last few years. You may not have noticed but there has been a list of qualifying events for 2024 on the website over the last few months and John has been busy doing some number crunching and calculated the league standings for the first six events. As it stands Sally and Clive Wilkinson are leading the women’s and men’s senior competitions, with Ethan Radcliffe leading the junior competition.

  • Wednesday, 13 March, 2024

  • Monday, 19 February, 2024

Congratulations to everyone who took part in yesterdays CompassSport Trophy Qualifiers in Kings Forest. It was a good day in the forest, the going was fast, furious and very wet! Sadly the club didn't qualify for the finals this year but SUFFOC came a very respectable 4th out of the clubs in our region with Ethan Radcliff winning his class - well done Ethan.

  • Thursday, 7 December, 2023

The East Anglia Orienteering Junior Squad were at the National Camp of M/W16s held at Hawkshead Youth Hostel in the Lake District last month. It was a great opportunity for the juniors to meet their national level peers and develop their orienteering skills over differing terrain.  The camp incorporated training sessions on three different areas over the course of the weekend. It was a really great weekend for the squad and included an amazing night sprint around the grounds of Hawkshead for both juniors and coaches.

  • Thursday, 7 December, 2023

Congratulations to our Club Champion 2023 - Louise Walker. Pictured above receiving the Club Championship SUFFOC Punch-Bowl and mug from our Chair, Simon Hooton. The Club Championships annually at an event staged by one of our neighbouring EAOA clubs, thus giving all SuffOC members an opportunity to compete. The results are adjusted to take into account the age of each competitor and the technical difficulty of the course so every club member has an opportunity to win.

  • Congratulations to our juniors who retained the Yvette Baker Shield at the Yvette Baker Trophy Final at Sandal Beat Wood in Doncaster on Sunday 9th July 2023. SUFFOC secured a maximum 500 points with Olivia Radcliffe, Ben Clarke, Elizabeth Rigby, Ethan Radcliffe and Aaron Radcliffe winning their classes.

  • Suffolk Orienteering Club hosted the East Anglian Championships 2023 at Tangham on February 5th.  It was  a beautiful day to be orienteering in one of our best areas.  Congratulations to the members of SUFFOC who are East Anglian champions this year .  They are Ethan Radcliffe (M12), Theo Steventon Barnes (M18), Alesha Lowe (W20), Gareth Radcliffe (M40) and Sally Wilkinson (W55).

  • The Final Details file for our Tangham event in Rendlesham Forest is now available - and online entries via the Racesignup website are due to close this evening, 30th January.

As the event also includes the East Anglian Championships and the presentation of trophies is due to be held at the event, please remember to return your trophy to Clive Wilkinson, the event organiser, if you were a 2022 winner of your age category.

  • This year's East Anglian Championships are being hosted by SuffOC at their Tangham (Rendlesham Forest) event on 5th February. Clive Wilkinson, the organiser, has requested that all 2022 trophy holders please ensure that the engraved trophy is returned so that it can be presented to the 2023 winners on the day of the event. If you're unable to attend perhaps someone else in your club would be able to return it for you? Please contact Clive if there are any issues.

  • Congratulations to our team of Juniors who competed in the Peter Palmer Relay Competition recently, winning the Norfolk Trophy for smaller orienteering clubs and achieving 8th place overall. The event took place in a foggy Sutton Park, near Birmingham, on 10th/11th September. The relay had 6 legs altogether; the teams arrived and spent the night sleeping (or not!) in a sports hall, ready to start at 5am the following morning - all great fun! Our thanks to our volunteers who accompanied them.

British Orienteering's report on the event can be read here. Will Heap was the official photographer and you can see his images on Flickr. Full results can be accessed from the links on the COBOC website.

  • Have you enjoyed a few of our events so you're now thinking of joining our Club?

The normal membership year runs from January 1st, but this year British Orienteering is offering new members 4 months extra, so if you join from September 1st 2022 your first subscription will run until the end of December 2023. You’ll find full details, including the links you’ll need, on the membership page of our website.

  • Congratulations to our team of Juniors for their success at winning the Shield section (for smaller clubs) of the Yvette Baker competition on Sunday, at an event hosted in Irchester Country Park by Leicestershire Orienteering Club. It was a closely-fought competition, with only 4 points between the first three teams once the number-crunching had been completed.

The overall scores were: SUFFOC: 497, SOS: 496, BKO: 493, while the individual contributions made were: James & Ethan, 100 points each on the Orange & Yellow courses respectively, & 99 points each for Alesha (Green), Ben & Olivia (both on Light Green). Full results can be viewed on the LEIOC website.

Our thanks to all those who took part, either competing or by supporting, with a special mention of Mr Roach from Barnardiston Hall School who helped to transport some of the team members.

  • The final event in our Ipswich-O 2022 series took place in Holywells Park today and the results can be downloaded from the website.

We're hoping to to welcome some of our Ipswich-O "graduates" to our other Summer events at Clare and Needham Lake - entry will be free if you have a signed Ipswich-O 2022 Passport Smile

  • Well done to all those who took part in today's event in Christchurch Park - you can view the overall results here.

The final event in the series will be in Holywells Park on Sunday 26th June - & don't forget that anyone with a signed Ipswich-O 2022 Passport will get free entry to our other two Summer Series events, in Clare on 3rd July & in Needham Lake Country Park on 17th July.

  • The next chance to take part in our evening MapRun Challenge series is happening soon. This one's at Pinewood, on the western side of Ipswich, & it's a 60 minute score course. Entry is free, but you'll need to have installed the MapRun app to use the GPS tracking & timing. If you missed either of the earlier meetings you can still try the new courses at Stowmarket & Ravenswood yourself, or with friends - you'll find links to full info on this webpage.

  • Another Ipswich-O event in beautiful weather, this time in Holywells Park, with many groups and families taking part - though obviously not disturbing the wildlife in the park!! The results have been uploaded and can be found here.

Many thanks to the volunteers who prepared and organised the event.

The next Ipswich-O event is in Christchurch Park on 11th June and before that date we have our Summer Series event in Bridge Wood (Orwell Country Park) on 5th June.

  • After last weekend's highly successful event, the next one is on Sunday 22nd in Holywells Park - see here for full details.

  • Ipswich-O 2022 got off to a flying start in beautiful weather in Christchurch Park yesterday afternoon, with many young entrants completing their course and proudly receiving their Passport of Achievement, as you can see. Fifty-five people took part, many of them in groups, and the results have now been uploaded to the website. Our thanks to all those volunteers who helped to make the event a success.

The next event will be in Holywells Park on Sunday 22nd May, starting at 13:00 - full details are here.

  • Congratulations to one of our Juniors, Olivia Radcliffe, on being selected for this year's training camp at Lagganlia in the Scottish Highlands. The camp is based at at the Outdoor Education Centre in the Spey valley, to the south west of Aviemore, and those attending will be training on the excellent orienteering areas in the vicinity. The camp only caters for 24 Juniors and those invited to attend will have undergone a tough selection process after first qualifying by reaching a high standard at the JK or the various British or Regional Championships.

Further information can be found on the JROS website.

  • Our series of Ipswich-O 2022 events is starting soon. These events, sponsored by Sport England, are designed for families, juniors, beginners & improvers - anyone, in fact, who enjoys exploring in the outdoors! At each event there'll be 3 courses to choose from and we'll help you understand the detailed map and how to use the timing system. Once you've completed your course you'll have your achievement listed in an Ipswich-O Passport - & that will give you free entry into our Simon Peck Summer Series events so you can practise your skills!

You can find details of the first event, in Christchurch Park, here.

Our series of MapRun Challenges is ongoing. These informal 60 minute score courses are tracked and timed using your Android or iPhone GPS & the MapRun6 app - and, if we start at roughly the same time, provide a chance to meet up for a chat & refreshments afterwards. All are welcome - the next one is in the Ravenswood area of Ipswich and the details are here.

  • SuffOC was well-represented at the British Long Distance & Relay Championships on March 26 & 27th. The events took place in tough heathland & woodland areas near Liphook in Surrey - and our team came third in the Junior Ad Hoc class! Our congratulations to Ben, James & Theo on their podium place, & to all the others who took part on various courses over the two events.

  • Our Club Championships were able to take place in 2021, unlike 2020, and this time the winner was Martin Hore, followed by Sally Wilkinson and Olivia Radcliffe in second and third place respectively. Our Chairman, Simon, duly presented the trophy, the Punchbowl, at our West Harling event last weekend.

The competition was held at NOR's Lynford event in December. The Club Champs results can be seen here & the overall results from the NOR webpage.

  • Our next online training session for members will be at 19:30 on Monday 7th February.  It will follow a similar format to previous sessions, i.e. part coaching and chat, part discussion of events coming up in the next couple of months.   The coaching will focus on the follow-up to an event, while the events section is likely to cover the CompassSport qualifier at Mildenhall North and the British Middle Distance Championships (to be held in "EAOA country" at Rushmere).

Please let Clive know if you wish to join us for the session so that he can send you the Zoom link.

  • The training session in Bridge Wood (Orwell Country Park) which had to be postponed because of the weather forecast and potential road closures before Xmas has been rescheduled for Saturday 29th January - see the events section, but all queries/registrations to Clive, please.

The Zoom meeting on preparing MapRun courses is on Wednesday 5th January at 7pm. All welcome, especially members who haven't dared to dip their toes into the "planning" area yet! Please email Sarah for the link to join the meeting.

  • Just a quick reminder that the SuffOC Championships will be held at NOR's Lynford event on 12th December. Entries are via SIEntries & close tomorrow, 5th December.

  • Our congratulations to Barnardiston Hall School for winning the Middle School Trophy at the British Schools Orienteering Championships at Stowe Park, Buckinghamshire on Sunday 21st November. There were two SuffOC Juniors competing at the Championships: James contributed to Barnardiston's First place in both the "Middle Schools" and the "Y7 Boys" categories, while Ben helped The Perse Upper School to gain fourth position against other "Large Secondaries".

  • Congratulations to Barney Steventon-Barnes who has been selected to join the GB Talent Squad South.  The performance pathway for junior orienteers has been improved this year by having three squads across the country (South, North and Scotland) and this will lower the amount of travelling for squad members and coaches.  Barney was selected through his performances at a number of selection races in 2021.  These squads are a natural progression from the regional squads for talented juniors.

Barney was also selected to take part in the 2021 training camp, held this year in Scotland instead of Sweden (because of travel restrictions). His account of the training, both in the dune areas of the Moray coast and in the beautiful Glen Affric, will feature in a future edition of the club "Punch" magazine.

  • Two smiling family - and SuffOC - members were photographed at the EAOA presentations during our Bury St Edmunds Urban event today. Sarah Mansel is pictured holding the Bill Stevens Trophy while her daughter Bronwen has the 2021 East Anglian Championship Women's Open Trophy, the latter won at the Regional Championships held at HAVOC's Epping Forest SW event on 26th September.

The Bill Stevens Trophy was created in memory of the SOS member who died in 1987; it is awarded annually for "for people who have contributed greatly to orienteering in the region at any level, often working in the background, and irrespective of competitive ability".

Our congratulations go to both Sarah and Bronwen!

  • The Club AGM, held after our recent event in Nowton Park, resulted in a few changes to the committee. We welcomed Simon as the new Chair, Clive and Sally as joint Secretary, and Adam as an additional committee member. Full details, including some additional non-committee Club roles, are listed on our Who's Who & Contacts page.

Will and Alison stood down as Chair and Secretary respectively and we would like to thank them for all the work they carried out on behalf of the Club.

  • The post of Punch editor has been vacant for a while, since both a Scottish university and a Scottish club enticed our previous editor to move up North. We're grateful that Louise Walker has now stepped into the breach and, now that orienteering is back on the road (and soon, hopefully, back in the forest!) hoping to get the next edition out by the end of August. Louise has already put out a request for articles via the club email list, so we'd better all get typing!

We'd like to thank our previous editor, Chloe, for all the work she did in this voluntary post, and wish her every success both on her course and with her new club.

  • We've now established permissions for our Simon Peck Summer Series & we also have a new venture, a series of Social MapRuns, as informal meets, open to all.

The SPSS events will have the normal format, i.e. a choice from 3 or 4  linear courses with SI timing, while the Social MapRuns will be score courses using GPS tracking.  The Social MapRuns are unashamedly based on the successful format used by local running clubs - meet near a pub, run, return to said pub for refreshment and chat.

The Social MapRuns will each involve a 60 minute "Street-O" score course where you will need to use the MapRun6 (or its predecessor, MapRunF) app on your smartphone.  In addition, carrying a printed map is an option which makes route planning easier - and is a necessity if you run with the MapRunG app on your Garmin sports watch.

The Social MapRuns planned so far are:

    8th June       Moreton Hall
    22nd June    Kesgrave
    13th July      Great Cornard
    27th July      Woodbridge
    10th August  Combs Ford, Stowmarket
31st August   Bury St Edmunds West

If you haven't used the MapRun app before you can find details on our MapRun pages. All will be welcome, whatever their level of experience, so please encourage your friends to have a go!

  • Now that restrictions are beginning to be lifted we have two events to look forward to in June. The first is on Sunday 6th in the Bridge Wood section of Orwell Country Park - an area well known for its contours and, though we've held events there previously, never fails to challenge! A newly-mapped area - the West Suffolk town of Clare - will be the venue for our second event on June 20th. The event will be centred on the Clare Castle Country Park, enabling the younger Juniors to have traffic-free courses while adults can explore the interesting mix of ancient and modern in the rest of the town. The third Summer Series event will be on July 18th, again on a newly mapped area - the grounds of the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, alongside the River Stour.

If you're wondering how best to train for these events - or would just like to do some additional orienteering without travelling too far - all our virtual courses are still available, & have, in fact, been increasing in number! The newest version of the app is MapRun6 & you can find our course locations summarised on this page. If you haven't tried any yet you'll find the background information here.

  • The second of the Mapping webinars is on Tuesday 4th May - this is the one which Martin is helping to present. For further details & links to the registration page see this news item. If you weren't able to take part in the first one you can still watch a recording from the British Orienteering Webinar page.

The previous evening we have our own online club session. Clive is running this session, with help from Sally & Simon. The session will include an initial presentation, trying out selected courses on Running Wild, small group discussions &, if you're lucky, even a fun quiz! All members should have received information about this - there's still time to apply, just email Clive.

  • The next two British Orienteering webinars cover the vital (to us!) topic of Mapping - and SuffOC's Martin Hore is helping to present the second one! For further details & links to the registration pages see this news item.

  • Fingers crossed our Summer Series will be able to take place - &, prior to that, Simon & Clive are holding a virtual training session on Monday 8th March. It will be via Zoom, open to all present & past members of SuffOC, & will feature a mix of ideas to help you prepare, including fitness, virtual 'O' & technical skills. The session will be suitable for both experienced & newer members - it'll be lovely to see people again, even though we can't meet in the forest or park at the moment.

So - put the event on your calendar:

    Monday 8th March, 19.30

    SuffOC Zoom meeting

& let Simon know that you're planning to attend so that he can send you an invitation to join the meeting.

  • From 5th January all organised orienteering events, leagues, coaching etc have been suspended - you can read the full statement from British Orienteering here.

Individuals are encouraged to continue to exercise locally & you probably have your own preferred routes close to home. If you happen to live near one of our Virtual Courses you may like to try it to practise your "O" skills - there's no limit to the number of times you can repeat any of the courses so trying to improve your route choices, along with your fitness level, could take you higher up the MapRun leaderboard!

  • We're still hoping to bring you the events we've scheduled for 2021, but, in the meantime, along with many other clubs, we've been continuing to develop our catalogue of virtual MapRun courses. The courses are similar to those we put on in our Summer Series - the latest offerings are a score course in Aldeburgh, thanks to Ray, & a long & short linear course in Elmswell, generated by Sarah's Purple Pen. At the suggestion of one of our regular MapRunners we're also beginning to put together some 5Km Run Routes, e.g. this one in Elmswell. As they're fairly simple routes they'll be a good introduction to MapRun, in addition providing a timed route for those missing their regular parkrun!

So - have a go, have fun, & encourage your friends to try our virtual courses to liven up Xmas & the New Year..

  • The current restrictions mean that we have to postpone our Tunstall Forest event for members - we'll keep you posted!

In the meantime, the forests are still open for you to run or walk in individually or with a friend, & our MapRun courses are available for virtual orienteering Smile

  • Have you tried any of our MapRun courses? We now have a variety of courses, situated in many parts of the county - enough for us to be able to set up a League for these courses, in addition to our regular league for official events. Sarah has set up a pilot league for the remaining months in 2020 & this will be scaled up for next year.

The courses for November league points are Felixstowe Long & Claydon & Blakenham (All the original courses are still available on MapRunF at the moment but aren't included in the league any longer).

You can find full details of the league here.

  • At our Haughley Park event on Sunday the club made a presentation to John & June Webb in recognition of their outstanding contribution to orienteering in Suffolk. The committee had spent some time discussing the ideal gift for two dedicated orienteers & decided that a large-scale map of Ickworth Park, together with a purpose-made 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle based on the map, would be perfect.

John & June have been involved with the club for well over 40 years: planning, mapping, acting as committee members & volunteering at events, in addition to competing (which they still do as an M80 & W85). Martin Hore introduced the presentation - you can read his text here & find further reminiscences on our "Looking Back" webpage.

  • We've done "Lockdown Orienteering" & "Virtual Bury St Edmunds" - now that we're allowed a little more freedom, albeit very carefully, why not try running a real orienteering course? We can't offer mass events with physical SI controls but we have been working on courses which you can follow on your own, or with your family group, using the GPS on your smartphone together with an app, MapRunF.

We've a handful of courses already waiting for you - mainly Street-Os at the moment, similar to some of our Summer Series events, as we need to choose areas with easy public access. There's a whole new section on the website explaining what to do, starting from here, so why not give it a go & share your results with us?

  • With World Orienteering Day originally scheduled for next week Lockdown Orienteering has put together a series of virtual challenges - anyone can take part, but you do need to register before 13:00 on Tuesday 12th May.

More locally, we've designed an armchair challenge for you for the following week as unfortunately all our annual Simon Peck Summer Series events have had to be cancelled, or at least postponed for some time. You can view the details here & the map & questions will be available from 29th May, with the answers published on Monday 1st June.

  • Could you plan virtual orienteering courses? Courses which people could try on their own while maintaining physical distancing, for when things ease a little? British Orienteering is putting on 3 webinars (free to members) during the next three weeks:

Routegadget: With Simon Errington, Happy Herts Orienteering Club (HH) on Thursday 7 May at 7.30pm

MapRun: With Pat MacLeod, North Gloucestershire Orienteering Club (NGOC) on Tuesday 12 May at 7.30pm

Open Orienteering Map: Tuesday 19th May at 7:30pm

Further details & registration links are to be found on the British Orienteering website.

  • We know that some people are participating in "Lockdown Orienteering" instead of the JK - it's probably too late to enter now, but British Orienteering have created a page with links to resources & are also welcoming reminiscences about previous JK events.

Worth looking at.. Stay safe, folks..

  • Along with the governing bodies of other sports, British Orienteering has issued the following statement:

    Suspension of all orienteering activities

It is with great sadness that we are now in a position where all orienteering activities in the UK have to be suspended with immediate effect.

We are aware that the Coronavirus outbreak is a very fluid and rapidly changing situation. We will, therefore, continue to follow advice from Public Health England, World Health Organisation and both local and national governments on this matter and will keep the orienteering family updated as appropriate.

  • The results of both the EA League & the new EA Urban League were published at the end of the year & the presentations took place at SOS’s EA League event at Writtle Forest on 2nd February.   Congratulations to our eight age-class winners - Roderick, Chloe, Bronwen, Lizzie, Sarah & Sally in the EAL & to Alesha & Phil in the EAUL.

The 2020 EA League started on 2nd February at SOS's Writtle Forest event & the 2020 EA Urban League will begin on 16th May (tbc) in Harwich.

  • The presentation of the Punchbowl & a SuffOC mug to Chloe, the winner of the 2019 Club Championships, was made at our Knettishall Heath event on Sunday.

The Club Champs were held at NOR's Shouldham Warren event in December. The weather, the venue & the courses combined to make a highly enjoyable event, &, once the number-crunching had been carried out, Chloe was in first place, followed by Will & then Isaac. Congratulations everyone, & our thanks to NOR providing the basis for such a good competition.

  • If you were kind enough to donate your map so that another competitor could use it for an on-the-day-entry after the printed maps had run out - first, a big thank you from the Planner & Organiser, & second, you can download the map file from this page if you wish to have a copy for your records.

  • The new version of our Club League starts this Sunday - January 12th - at Knettishall Laughing

John has circulated the basic info in our Punch newsletter & you can find an outline of the new scheme - with provisional dates for some of the events - here (please check back at intervals for further additions to the list). You'll find that the best way to score points is run the class recommended for your age group (which will be the same as the one for an EA League event) although you may be able to enhance your score by "running up". The scoring system  will be similar to the one in the previous version of the league - it looks complicated at first, but does take into account age class & level of difficulty.

Online entries are open until 8th January - on-the-day entry will be possible on all courses, subject to map availability, but will, apart from those for Juniors & club volunteers, cost a little extra.

Participants in the Club League do need to be current members - err - have you remembered to renew your subscription?

  • Congratulations to Colin, who was awarded the Simon Peck Award for 2019 for his work on updating & greatly extending the Gunton Denes & Dip Farm map - in addition to planning a popular 3-course event for this year's Summer Series. Will, our chairman, finally caught up with Colin to make the presentation during our Daisy's Wood event.

  • Another Gold medal for one of our Juniors - this time for Barney in the Y10 Boys class at the British Schools Orienteering Championships at Black Park, near Slough, on 17th November. James was also part of the Barnardiston Hall team which won Bronze in the Y5 Boys competition. Congratulations!

  • The East Anglian Schools' Championships were held as part of Norfolk Orienteering's Hockham event on 10th November. Alesha took Gold in the Y11 class (& 5th overall on the Light Green course) while James was in 3rd place in the Y6 boys (& on the White course). Congratulations to them both, & to all who took part in this interesting but tricky area.

  • The British Schools Score Championships took place on October 12th in Heaton Park, Manchester, in excellent weather.  James achieved a silver medal in the Year 5 Boys class with 150 points, just 10 points behind the winner, & his brother Ben finished 10th in the highly competitive Year 10/11 Boys class. Both the boys' and girls' teams from Barnardiston Hall School came second in the Middle Schools Category. Congratulations to all who took part.

  • We had planned, together with our neighbouring club, WAOC, a forest-and-urban weekend, & had promised two contrasting events, but had not anticipated quite how much difference there would be! Saturday's event at West Harling was held in beautiful autumnal sunshine while Sunday's weather was the subject of a Met Office severe weather warning. The warning, together with early heavy rain & difficult driving conditions, discouraged some participants, but those who did attend had a second day of excellent orienteering.

Links to both sets of results, together with Routegadget maps, UKUL & SEOUL listings, comments from event officials, & to Steve Rush's excellent photos of the urban, taken despite the difficult weather conditions, are on our Results page.

Our thanks to all those who helped to make the events such a success - & to those who allowed us to use the venues.

  • We've had the first event, in the forest at West Harling today (you can view the results here), & our first-ever complete urban event in Bury St Edmunds is tomorrow, Sunday. There'll be courses to suit everyone, whatever your age or fitness level, &, in the urban, special "Taster" courses for newcomers. On-the-day entry is available for the "Taster" & for the competition courses - it's best to plan to arrive early in the registration period to enter your preferred competition course, as we have a finite number of maps still available for each one.

Our most recent Events Newsletter has information on Autumn in Anglia & on our other events over the winter, with links to more detailed information.

Urban orienteering's great fun - & the Junior courses are virtually traffic free so it's good for youngsters, with or without family support on the actual course!

  • Entries are now open for our orienteering weekend in early October. We'll be at West Harling on Saturday 5th & in the centre of Bury St Edmunds the following day, so you'll experience both forest & urban orienteering.

It's possible for individuals to enter any of the main courses via the Fabian4 website (& also to hire a SI card if necessary) - it enables you to fast-track straight to the Start on the day, unless you're hiring a SI card, & ensures that we have the correct map for you. Entry on the day will depend on map availability.

Both days cater for all levels of experience - the urban event has "Taster" courses for newcomers - & we know that beginners often prefer to enter with friends/family members. If you're interested in group entry or a "Taster" course then you'll need to enter on the day - you'll probably want to ask our Helpdesk for advice on the best course to select anyway.

  • On Sunday morning a group of us met up at the Ipswich Cornhill to be issued with maps & instructions for our Elm-O - basically a fun score event trying to visit as many of the 55 elephant sculptures as we could in 90 minutes. There were no SI units or gripples to be seen; we had to collect a certain letter from the sponsorship information from each statue (a way of ensuring that we didn't just sit in the pub & fill in our control cards from one of the official glossy brochures!). Urban 'O' planners could take note that the prominent placement of the statues meant that we visited some of the best parts of the town - shopping centres, railway station, waterfront (the latter two linked by a delightful path along the Gipping, depending on your route choice) - there was even a statue inside the library - no poking about in the back of car parks or under stairs to find hidden controls!

There were approximately 37 participants, a mixture of experienced orienteers, local runners & family groups, some aiming to visit all 55, some just wanting to explore the town centre & spend a bit more time enjoying the patterns on the different elephants. A total of £60 was raised for the St Elizabeth Hospice. Our thanks go to Clive & Sally for devising & organising the event. The Elmers will be on display until 7th September & if you weren't able to join us on Sunday you can still obtain a copy of the O map from Clive & Sally - perhaps at Hardwick Heath on Saturday? - if you'd like to try the run on your own.

  • This year's Suffolk Schools Orienteering Championships were held on Thursday 23rd May. There had previously been regional heats in Eye, Beyton & Mildenhall & nine teams from seven schools had qualified for the final, held for the third year running at the Thorpe Woodlands Adventure Centre in Thetford Forest.

Congratulations to all who took part, particularly to the teams from Debenham who achieved 1st place in the individual pairs event and who also won the team competition and to the Roughham & Charsfield teams who were placed 2nd & 3rd respectively. The complete report and results list can be downloaded from our website.

  • We had beautiful weather in Sheringham Park for the EAOA championships last Sunday. Peter & Steve had created some excellent courses in what is one of East Anglia's most "technical" areas (tricky contours, in other words!). Congratulations to Bronwen on her win in the W21 age class. The other class winners can be viewed here and the overall results on the Norfolk OC website.

  • Belated congratulations to our 2018 Club League prizewinners: Clive (Seniors, 1st place), Sarah (Seniors, 3rd, & 1st Lady), Barney & Tim (Juniors, joint 1st place) & Chloe (Juniors, 3rd, & 1st Lady). Holding presentation ceremonies has proved to be a little difficult, but we've now managed to catch up with all except Tim at different orienteering events (some of them on a very wet Knettishall Heath!). The final results can be seen here.

  • We had several first-timers at our Knettishall event: Tracie, Chloe & Orlando have uploaded a record of their experiences on the Orange course here.

Maps: If you kindly gave your White or Brown map to another competitor at the event - thank you for helping, & our apologies that it was necessary - it's so difficult to predict numbers!

You can download a copy of the relevant map from the links below:

    White

    Brown (first side)

    Brown (second side)

We also found a carrier bag containing a pair of shoes & gloves. Apparently it had been left at a previous event - maybe the recent WAOC or CUOC event - & brought to Knettishall in case the owner was looking for it. If yours, please email knettishall@suffoc.co.uk

  • Congratulations to our four age-class winners - Barney (M14), Neil (M40), Lizzie (W35) & Sarah (W50) - in last year's East Anglian League. The trophy presentation took place at WAOC's Bush Heath event last weekend - & that event was also the start of the 2019 League! The next chance to score points in the 2019 League will occur on 9th February at CUOC's Icenian 2019 event, Wormley Wood, Broxbourne.

  • Our Late Winter Events Newsletter has been mailed out to members & subscribers - it contains info about our Knettishall event so, if you'd like to read it but aren't on our mailing list you can access it here.

We've since had the go-ahead to release the Final Details file & this has now been uploaded to the website.

  • This year’s Club Championships were held at WAOC’s Rowney Warren event on 25th November. The Warren is described as "a well-contoured pine forest with significant spur and valley structure" & the event was chosen as it provided a greater technical challenge for the competitors.

Our congratulations to Lizzie Rosewell for a storming run which enabled her to win the SuffOC Punchbowl this year and to her husband, Neil, the close runner-up.

The results for the Club Championships can be downloaded from our website..

  • From John, our Club Captain:

The British Schools Orienteering Championships took place last weekend at Witton Country Park in Blackburn. The weather was superb and our juniors did very well, securing a number of podium places. Theo Stevenson-Barnes came 2nd in the B7 category; Barney Steventon-Barnes was 3rd in the B9 category and Matt Clarke, in his final school championships, finished 3rd in the B13 class.

Barnardiston School took over 20 runners to the competition. The majority of their competitors had only taken up the sport at the beginning of term but they still managed some good runs, notably Ollie Vendy who came 3rd in the B5.

  • Our congratulations to Clive for his expert navigation around the streets, alleyways and bridges of Venice (with tourists adding an additional hazard) on the 10th & 11th November. This was the first time that Clive had competed in this event and he was placed 3rd in his age category over the 2 stages, one at night & the other the following day. You can watch a video which demonstrates the type of terrain here and...

  • Congratulations to our SuffOC team for their performance at the CompassSport Final at Abraham's Valley, near Rugeley, Staffordshire yesterday. The team was placed 9th out of 15 - the highest placing SuffOC has ever achieved at a Final in this competition.

The Club also had its own "Run In" competition for the fastest time between the final control and the finish. Bronwen was First Lady, in a time of 37 secs, & Roderick won the male competition with a time of 31 secs.

The overall results can be found on the Walton Chasers' website & our Club results are here.

  • There were excellent results for some of our Juniors at the British Schools Score Orienteering Champs at Moors Valley Country Park, Ringwood, Dorset on 13th October. In the individual classes Matt was placed first, Chloe & Barney second, & Theo third in their respective age classes. Both Barnardiston Hall & the Perse School were "in the medals" in the various team categories. Well done, everyone!

  • Congratulations to Paul Lowe for being nominated to receive this year's Simon Peck Award for his hard work to ensure that the Summer Series ran smoothly. Paul acted as Controller for each of the events, giving advice to those planning the courses, & also calmly administered the registration & results recording on the day. The award was presented by our outgoing Chair, Louise, at the AGM held during our Ickworth Park event.

Good Luck, everyone!

  • Congratulations to Barney for being selected for the JROS training camp at Lagganlia near Aviemore this summer. Only 24 Juniors (M/W14s) from across the country obtain places at this camp, so there has been stiff competition at the qualifying events which included the JK & the British & regional championships.

  • This year's Suffolk Schools Orienteering Championships were held on Thursday 24th May. There had previously been regional heats in Eye, Beyton & Bury St Edmunds & ten teams from eight schools had qualified for the final, held for the second year running at the Thorpe Woodlands Adventure Centre in Thetford Forest.

The complete report and results list can be downloaded from our website..

  • Congratulations to our Juniors for winning the regional Yvette Baker Trophy Heat at Danbury Park on 13th May. It was a nail-biting time while the number crunching - & re-checking - was carried out, but SuffOC won by one point over Hertfordshire OC, with Essex Stragglers a mere one point behind in 3rd place. The team results have been summarised here and the full event results can be read on the Essex Stragglers' website.

Our team will go on to compete in the final in Arrow Park, near Redditch, on 1st July..

Matthew Clarke was also awarded the Joan George Trophy for the best performance by a Junior.

  • What will SuffOC members be doing on October 21st? A fair number of them will be orienteering on Cannock Chase, in the area marked in red on the map, competing in the final of the CompassSport Trophy. At the end of the Area Heats in Shouldham Warren on Sunday SuffOC found themselves in the lead of the Trophy section for smaller clubs, some 23 points ahead of the nearest rivals, Essex Stragglers. Norfolk OC also won the Cup section for larger clubs, so will be accompanying us to the final. Congratulations to all those who took part, and our thanks to the members of the various East Anglian clubs who helped to stage the event.

It will be an excellent way to try orienteering - you can start whenever you like during the afternoon & you'll be given a printed map & some instructions. The challenge could to plan a route to find checkpoints in a particular order, or you could decide to do do a "find-as-many-controls-as-you-can" in a given time. Further details can be found here.

  • The final event in the Essex & Suffolk Schools 'O' League took place at Wivenhoe last weekend and there were several SuffOC Juniors on the podium. After a nail-biting week the results have now been finalised and yes, SuffOC really did win against the 8 other clubs: together with SAX we have qualified for the final.
